Today, Head Magazine readers, I am very very excited to bring something to you that technically should not exist in the world of cannabis. What could this be, you ask, and I’ll tell you:

An incredibly powerful and well-curated strain of weed, which costs $20 per eighth. I had started to think this was the Moby Dick of cannabis, and I’d never be able to find such a thing.

But let’s rewind. A couple of weeks ago I had finally gotten a root canal and was at the dentist, halfway to feeling like a normal human being again, but events conspired against me and I then had to leave in a hurry, infuriatingly, and without treatment. I was quite bummed out about it.

So, thinking to myself I had to get some flower but didn’t have any money to buy some at this stage particularly, a dangerous and silly thought crossed my mind – go to an unknown dispensary closest to me and chance what was on offer there, probably to the detriment of my lungs, head and wallet.

But, the story goes on – at The Cure Company’s own dispensary, I found on offer a rather delightful selection of eighths in “smalls”.

For those not in the know, smalls are a very interesting conundrum in the cannabis world, and something which shouldn’t be ignored. In fact, when I started to look into it, it seems the cannabis farmers actually keep the smalls for themselves and are rather happy with things being this way.

To explain fully, smalls are taken usually from the bottom of the cola (conical cone shape of the bud) while the more appealing, “platinum” is saved for the big bud, and the pricing is equivalent. Smalls are a wonderful thing because it keeps the cannabis market’s price economy in line, and it leaves room for those of us struggling with money to be able to get a surprisingly good deal on occasion.

I’m very happy to say, this was such an occasion. And not just on this one flower, I’ve tried a couple and they were both very solid, more than they should be for their price quite frankly.

Alien OG is a strain I’ve tried a couple of times but did not like, it caused me a headache a couple of times, or just left me not really wanting more. It’s very heavy and indica based, with heavy body high, but also a fantastic cerebral head high that I don’t see often even in flower going for the highest price, it’s kind of a conundrum if I was to be honest.

But it’s a happy thing, and when I got home I reluctantly opened my bag thinking it would be another horrible cheap cannabis product getting passed off as something decent, but low and behold, this thing fucking blew my top off on the first hit! Really fucking racey it was.

It had sort of notes of lemon, and caffeine, and some gas and sugar to it. Really fat, chunky feelings of sedation to it too. A weed this cheap has no right being this good, but hey, it slipped through the net and even better, it’s very widely available across the whole city. I even went straight back to get some more the next day it was that nice. And I didn’t have a dentist appointment.

This time around, it was already sold out, so I opted for a half ounce of Lemon Cherry Gelato – the old LCG – and although the budtender didn’t seem overly convincing of its quality to me, I went ahead anyway in a moment of extreme stupidity, and once again, I was rewarded,

The LCG, if you’re interested, is a lot darker, more purple than the Alien OG, and had a really pleasing funk to it that you’ll be familiar with if you know the strain. Coming in a half OZ jar for around $70 with my first time discount, it beat the ass off the local smog check / car wash trap shop dispensary I’d been going to as of late. Goodbye KushFactory, it was good while it lasted.

This is some serious shit, I would urge you to gout and get some quickly.

And to look more closely at it, we see things really improving in the world of lower-end cannabis, if you look at the pictures, the buds are in really nice shape – strong, muscular, and prickly to break down like a pine cone. That’s a sign of quality for the uninitiated: the bud should be quite gnarly, it should prick your fingers, and it should challenge your hands a little bit. It’s fine if it’s soft but lately I see a lot of weed that isn’t cured properly, and this is the sign that it was done so with great skill.

Effects wise, I started to feel really quite tired and worn down, exhausted even, which is what I want when I’m smoking at home, to the point where I packed it up, packed it in, and went to bed for a restful night’s sleep. It’s really not often to find these types of premium effects with a flower at this price point, I might still have to pinch myself to check I’m awake. It’s also got enough of a Sativa kick that you can get some really nice video games done with it in the day.

Having just got a Nintendo Switch 2, the Alien OG fueled my gaming sessions very nicely, leaving me wanting a lot more afterward. I’m quite excited to go back and see what else happens next.

Well done to you, The Cure Company, who are most famously known for their strain The Marathon OG, a hugely popular strain in its home of Los Angeles, and late rapper Nipsey Hustle’s own contribution to the world of cannabis, which perhaps I’ll review in the near future.
