I think I may have found a new friend.  It’s heavy diesel, it’s pine, and in the words of Mark from the cult classic Sin City, it’s just nasty.. a really beautiful, special flower that is balanced in every single way. Uplifting and sedating at the same time, and euphoric, Gas Truffle by Royal Farms is a rare thing to behold in the weed world these days. It goes under the guise of an Indica but is heady as all get-out. Be warned though, it is also something of a rollercoaster.

This is not a jack of all trades, and master of none however: rather, it might be the master of the whole universe.

The growers have nailed the core elements of great cannabis right down here with all the hallmarks of great color, humidity and effects – it’s raw, undeniably potent, but also has charm and a certain kind of charisma to it which is very hard to find on the market right now.

It might be considered the Timothy Chalamet of cannabis, or the Denzel of doja — a heady combination to say the least. It’s super fresh, barely a month from the date of packaging, in perfect condition. As I smoked it I mused that this could be the perfect flower in many ways.

It burns clean in the bong where others from top brands have made me choke badly recently, and it also brought my recent wildfire-induced anxieties down in a way I did not anticipate. Pleasingly sedative and well-rounded, it’s an all-star, and it wants to help you feel good. I have not been this impressed by a newcomer to the flower scene for a very long time. Nay, it seems hard to even find anything new in the top shelf category these days, as the market seems to be whittling down to mid-grade, mid-quality cannabis across the board in an attempt to sell more, I expect, which is just a terrible and sad thing to behold. It means only a few companies control the top end and that means the consumer’s choice is far less.

Gas Truffle – an incredible cross of Grape Gasoline and Truffle, holds an essence which I believed to be long gone from weed, more akin to flower you might find on the black market — if you’re lucky enough to. Fitting, because the packaging is decked out in sex-club black: it would be quite at home in the Berghain night club in Berlin.

On that note, smoking this feels like being invited to an exclusive member’s club for weed connoisseurs, and best of all: it comes packaged in a five-gram jar, which means you are getting a lot more bang for your buck than any other weed brand out here on the West Coast, as almost every brand packages it in 3.5 gram jars, or an “eighth” (1/8 oz.)

This harks back to my days of going to the underground dispensaries early in my time here in LA, that look like tiny houses, where a sinister black latex-gloved hand would greet you from a hole in the wall by the door to check your ID.

Inside was a tiny space, which felt like the size of a sardine can, brightly lit packed with gigantic glass jars lined up on shelves behind and on top of the counter — not to mention a tsunami of kiffs, hash, resin, all kinds of concentrates, waxes and infused blunts. The strains had names like Alaskan Thunderfuck, Yoda OG and Mindfuck, which represents a special kind of creativity you just don’t see anywhere else. And boy did the flower back those names up. I think I’m still in recovery from them today.

And when you asked the budtenders – also very interesting and engaging folk on their own merits – to see the “top shelf” and “exotics” they would let put your nose as far into the jar as much as was permitted and it would tear your face off. Heaven. Side note, as I also discovered, under no circumstances should you attempt to touch the said jar or flower inside. Earth-shattering strains of Obama Kush, Venom OG, NYC Sour Diesel, Super Glue, these were all certainly finds of the very best cannabis I have ever had the fortune to try.

Not that this flower is quite at that level, but for its price tag, this wins in the Best Newcomer Award category hands down with great aplomb.

Perhaps next year it will sweep the board.
