Head Magazine, iconic in the 1970s as a printed publication and now in its sixth year as an e-zine, is a place where people passionate about writing fit right in. The invitation to contribute content is open year-round, and all are welcome.

You don’t need to fit inside the cookie-cutter you’re crammed into at other magazines, where they demand the “right” college degrees and the “right” professional experience to join the team. And you’re not told to tailor your writing to the lowest-common-denominator reader by limiting your vocabulary and narrative to the literary equivalent of a GIF image. And you’re not forced to use technology aids (chatbots, apps, etc.) to produce content, as you’re free to do what works best for you. All of that means the world to anyone who loves writing.

In short, Head is a place to call home if you were born to be a writer and can’t stop writing, no matter what gets in the way. The magazine’s eclectic coverage, which spotlights but doesn’t confine itself to weed, shows the publication’s staying power over 40 years after its ink-and-paper prime. Head is here to stay – and you should be too. Here are three things you’ll get if you submit your work and have it published by Head.

Portfolio

Since 2019, through my work for Head Magazine, I have developed a portfolio of 100+ articles that demonstrate how versatile my writing is. I have these organized and categorized on my personal website for ease of sharing, but they’re all housed on headmagazine.com.

Head Magazine maintains portfolios for all of its authors, such as my portfolio here.

The magazine handles all of the back-end aspects of content management, and all I have to do is share a link with someone when they ask for a sample of my work. When you write for Head, you have this advantage when seeking additional opportunities to do what you love.

Publicity

Head Magazine’s editor-in-chief and publisher, Charlotte Parker, owns Parker Communications and is one of Hollywood’s most respected entertainment publicists. When Charlotte, considered by many to be the “godmother” of cannabis media, represents Head at industry events, her public relations benefit Head writers by proxy.

Charlotte Parker’s fascinating journey to becoming the creator, editor and publisher of Head Magazine will amaze you! When you write for Head, she’s your de facto PR rep.

Being featured in a magazine with a history, led by a PR expert, gives you access to publicity that you don’t have to coordinate and manage yourself. As your name becomes linked to the magazine’s name through your articles, the fame-by-association is activated.

Mentorship

Charlotte is emotionally invested in her staff, and she has high standards (no pun intended, but no way around it) for Head’s content. If your first draft needs tweaking, she’s serious enough about her magazine to let you know, but she’s also professional enough to let you know how to revise your material. She expects the best work for a creation she’s maintained for nearly five decades, but she’s compassionate, and it shows.

Charlotte’s commitment to helping people reach their potential is clear from her effort to publicize little-known scholarship opportunities.

As one of the e-zine’s earliest contributors, I have had numerous opportunities to learn from Charlotte’s scrutiny of my work. When something is missing, phrased poorly or unclear, she tactfully addresses it with me within hours of reviewing my first draft. In some cases, the revisions she leads me to are minor; in other cases, I do total rewrites from her feedback. In all cases, my writing has improved as a result. That’s mentorship at its finest.
