The legalization of marijuana in some form in thirty-three states and the District of Columbia has many pet owners wondering about its potential benefits for cats and dogs. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of marijuana use with regard to cats and dogs?

Pros

Cannabis oil has proved effective in treating anxiety, digestive issues, seizures, arthritis, stress, nausea, back pain, gastrointestinal issues,   symptoms of cancer, and many other health issues in pets.

Marijuana and related products promote proper functioning of a pet’s body. These products work by stimulating the endocannabinoid system to improve homeostasis in the body. For this reason, marijuana is regularly used as a supplement to promote the overall health and well-being of pets.

Veterinarians have found out that cannabis oil helps to relief pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, inflammation, and cancer.  Furthermore, it is useful in treating acute conditions such as torn ligaments, strains, bone breaks, and sprains.

Marijuana has unique anti-cancer properties and therefore, CBD oil is used to slow the growth of tumors and the spread of cancer in pets.

While it’s not very clear how marijuana work s as an anticonvulsant, it’s generally believed to have the ability to control tremors, seizures, tics, and spasms.

Marijuana products are certainly more effective than traditional medications and treatments as they do not have severe side effects with the right dosage.

Some of the safe and recommended marijuana products include CBD oil, THC, and hemp products. Marijuana edibles like cookies, brownies, and pot butter are not safe for cats and dogs hence are not recommended.

Cons

Although very rare, marijuana for pets can trigger undesirable side effects which include vomiting, excessive itching, and loss of balance, breathing problems, lethargy, and abnormal heart rhythms.

Another challenge associated with the use of marijuana for pets is that its use is based on anecdotal evidence and not scientific evidence.  The products have not undergone rigorous testing like in the case of human drugs and medicines.  Therefore, it may be difficult to understand its benefits and side effects.

Pet owners are advised to consult a qualified veterinarian first before considering any kind of treatment with marijuana products.

Legislators in several states have introduced bills that seek to enhance scientific research on medical marijuana for pets.   For instance, there is a bill in Florida that seeks to permit the University of Florida to research on the potency of cannabis to treat animal ailments.
