My Experience With Edibles

I’m an old pot smoker from wayback – when you could buy a pound of Colombian Gold, or several ounces of Thai Sticks or real Hashish. So the new world of edibles took me almost by surprise.

The first edible I took was in Las Vegas. I walked into a dispensary and talked to the budtender who recommended Indica when I said I wanted to chill. (We didn’t have these distinctions back then). I took a half and went to the movies. Nothing happened. So, I took the other half. This was my first edible and I did not realize that it can take up to two hours to kick in. The edible was 7.8 mg and I was flying!  I really had no idea what it would be like.

I have come a long way since then. I have tried a multitude of edibles, some of which you can see in our cover photo. I am going to talk about some of the brands I have tried, the potencies, and my experiences with them.

Dosages

Depending on how high I want to get (I sometimes take less) I generally go with 5 milligrams.  Most edibles come in 10 mg units – so I frequently cut them in half. Although, if I just want a buzz, I can find edibles that have 2 to 2.5 mg THC/ 2 -2.5 mg CBD.

PLUS Brand offers one that is 3.5THC/1.5 CBD.  I’ve always enjoyed that one.

I like to take the 1:1 THC to CBD. One of the newcomer is CBG gummies.  Dispensaries now offer edibles that are 1:1 THC/CBG and 1:1:1 THC/CBD/CBG. Cheeba Chews just came out with one of those.

I find that for experienced users 10 mg is good, but for me that would be just too much – with 5 mg or even less sometimes being plenty.

CBD, CBG and CBN

Re CBG:  I have CBG cigarettes and, if I am very stressed in the evening, smoking a CBG cigarette will take the edge off and not get me high. See more on CBG here: https://headmagazine.com/i-found-cbg-and-now-its-my-favorite-thing-to-smoke/

I am one of those people that don’t like to be high to go to sleep, so I prefer to take my edibles earlier in the day, usually by 2 or 3 pm at the latest.

One caveat – I am told CBN is wonderful as a sleep aid.

When I smoke the CBG it cuts anxiety, however, I’m still working on how it feels when I take it in the edible,

For a general anxiety cutting and an “up” high, I like 1:1 CBD/THC. I will update later after I try more configurations of the above.

Duration

For me, edibles usually last about six hours, but some have lasted eight hours and some have even ten hours.  The high with different edibles and different brands can vary for me. Even the same brand and the same edible out of the same package can be different on different days.  Even if I take them at the same time of day with a similar amount of food, the intensity of the high and the general experience can differ.

Also, I find it is a good idea (for me) to vary the brands and also not take them days in a row. I usually like to wait at least three days, sometimes more, between them. The least would be two days.  I had such a great experience with one edible that I took it again the next day – and the experience wasn’t nearly the same.

Some of My Favorite Brands

Among my favorite brands are Wyld and Cheeba Chews. One of the early best highs I’ve had was with the Wyld Huckleberry Hybrid THC. Another of my great highs has been with the Chocolate Taffy Cheeba Chews that are 1:1 THC/CBD.  I have Wyld gummies in every configuration in my personal stash including their THC Hybrid, THC Sativa, THC Indica, 1:1 CBD/THC, 1:1 CBG/THC, and 2:1 CBD/THC.

I generally stick with 1:1 CBD/THC unless I’m super stressed out (which can happen!) and then I take the 3:1 either CBD/THC or CBG/THC.

Kiva is another good brand. They have many different kinds of edibles and even chocolate. I’ve stuck with their 5mg THC and they also have 1:1 CBD/THC. They have one I like when I need to really chill and don’t want to get very high. It is 2mgTHC/6 mg CBD.

But after taking gummies for a while with CBD and CBG, I feel like getting back to some edibles that are just straight THC.  I love the WYLD Huckleberry Hybrid.  They also have a Sativa and an Indica. I’ve taken the Sativa and it’s quite good. I still haven’t tried the Indica, but I plan to.

I’m just now experimenting with the Gron Pearls, which also look like a quality product. (They were recommended by the Head Budtender at Planet 13.) One of the Gron Pearls gummies have a 3:1 CBG/THC.  I intend to give that one a try when I want to calm down and uplift at the same time. I also have their 1:1 CBD/THC, which I am looking forward to trying!

Sativa and Indica

Sativa is supposed to be more of an up, and the Indica more relaxing – but that’s not always the case. Although one of the best experiences I’ve had (but it was with a pre-roll) was an Indica joint. So, there’s really no telling anymore.

The Smokiez Sour Peach Fruit Chews Indica strain were so relaxing that I couldn’t believe it. I took it one day to work – but it was just too darn relaxing, so I made a note to take it when I really want to chill out and just totally relax.

Edibles vs Smoking

There are some differences between smoking and edibles for me. When it’s in the evening, and I don’t want the high to last for so many hours, I smoke some marijuana. I have control over how much I smoke. The high usually lasts about 3 hours. And again, the Sativa vs Indica – is the luck of the draw, in my opinion.

The high can be slightly different with an edible. Once an edible kicks in, the high can generally be pretty great and it lasts – and very slightly different from smoking. But, hey. there’s some pretty great marijuana out there as well.

A Note About Different People’s Chemistry

I believe that different brands work differently with different people’s chemistry. So the brands and dosage that work for me might be different for you, your friend, or your partner.
